Just got hit up by [email protected] on craigslist concerning a macbook pro laptop. sounded fishy. Didn't give him any help.

adam

just got a reply from [email protected] to pay for a macbook pro with paypal. thing that confuses me is that paypal is pretty legit. anyone ever heard that this guy is a scammer?

George

Adam:

I have not heard about the name you mentioned. While PayPal is a legit company, there are a few phishing scams going around re PayPal:

https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=xpt/Help/general/TopQuestion5-outside

Try to think of it from a scam artist's point-of-view: no difference if the scam artist can get victims to pay via PayPal instead of a traditional paper checks (or wire transfers). It's still money for the scam artist. So same advice applies to protect yourself.

The Larry Silva fake cashiers check scam via Craigslist is alive and well today September 16, 2011. I received this email from him today regarding a piano I'm trying to sell on Craigslist:

From: larry silva [mailto:[email protected]]
Sent: Friday, September 16, 2011 10:34 AM
To: XXXXX
Subject: Re: CASIO PIANO

Thanks for writing back. I'm sorry I won't be able to come see it , I am embarking on a business trip this evening. I still want it anyway if you could sell it to me. A Cashiers check with an excess amount on it will be sent to you, so all you need to do when you receive the check is to deduct your fee and wire the remaining cash balance on the payment to my Shipper who will be handling the pick up and delivery so it doesn't stress you .I really need this, quite important and urgent. I will be more than glad if it can be sold to me. Email me back with your Full name, Address in Full and your cell phone number so that the check can be issued out to you, write back soon. Best Regards.

PS: I am ready to pay you additional $20 with your asking price if you can go ahead and secure the item for me.

I've got him knocking on my door right now for a post on CraigsList... What's the best way to catch this prick once and for all?

Is there some official internet contact info out there? Anyone know?

George

JWR:

While it would feel satisfying to catch this criminal, the likelihood is that "Larry Silva" is really several people using that name and operating from outside the USA.

Had several similar replies to the above from "Larry Silva" for different Craigslist items posted... asking if still available an hour or less after posting, and wanting to "come see it right away..."

The tipoff was that he used different email addresses on each ad, (2 ads - [email protected]) (1 ad - [email protected]) with the same "reply to" address on all... ([email protected])

Google that address... LOTS of hits... seems to be a full-time job for him...

This guy needs to be traced & taken down!!
(or at leased seriously messed with!)

someone

[email protected] also e-mailed me, trying to scam.

Annette

Another Larry Silva...
Thanks so much for your quick response, I will be arriving with my family by october, but before our arrival i will want to make sure where i will be moving too is fully furnished...I'm coming to your area because i have just gotten a transfer letter from my company and i need someone to watch my pet ...I will be there for a period of one year,

Kindly be informed that you would be getting an upfront payment for the first week from my company before I start caring for the bills myself.

A Check will be sent to you by my company and then the Check will be in excess amount, after receiving the Check you are to deduct your week salary which is and wire the rest of the funds to the property agent in-charge of my furniture's and fittings. I hope i can trust you with Smileys and count on you as regards the payment.

   If so kindly get back to me with your Full names to be on the check, your Mailing address and also a valid cell phone # of yours. Thanks for willing to watch Smileys and please let me know your thought in this...

Cheers

Another Larry Silva scam.

Hey everyone... thanks for posting to this page! I got an email from Larry Silva on Oct. 9 2011 responding to my craigslist ad. Here's the email addresses used:

[email protected] (requesting replies to here)
[email protected] (email sent from here)

Watch out for these email addresses.

Laura

I too was contacted by a Larry Silva with the email address of [email protected]
. He wanted to pay in advance for house cleaning service and said he was moving to my area from Canada. A few days later I got a check via FedEXfor $2,700 plus dollars and right away recieved an email from him saying to hurry up and cash the check and MoneyGram him 2,4000. When I called Wells Fargo they said the account was real but had been hyjacked and the police came and took all the information. Please investigate any checks you get before you cash them or you will be stuck with the entire fee of the check and bank cost.

Jay

[email protected] is another of MR BRAHM email and he wanted to send mover payment to 123 Fedor Cir, Bloomington IL 61705.

might be going after old women as he replied to my antique sewing machine- its a good stratagy... but im not old or a woman. ;)

J

I have received a scam email from Victoria Givens, same as someone else above, for the same item on Craigslist (wedding dress). Total scam - glad I read up on some of these beforehand. Still in contact with her..."playing the game".

Elizabeth Del Debbio

Larry Silva emailed me regarding piano lessons for his daughter 'Faith'. This time it was [email protected] or something thereabouts. I also received an email from a Martin Steinbeck. I'll be ignoring both of them now!

Cat

Im dealing with "Larry Silva" currently. Unfortuently I wasnt pay close enough attention at first when I gave him my information to send the check to ( I was reading off the screen of my phone) when I got the check I noticed how much more it was for, immediately sending red flags up. Then he got very pushy and wouldn't stop saying immediately, telling me that I HAD to get to a money gram and send him the information and even calling me! He called me 5 times in a row at 3 AM!
In the mean time I have told him I do not feel comfortable and that I ripped the check. He told me he "smells something fishy" (HA HA) and that he has contacted the FBI....
I plan on going to the local police station tomorrow with the ripped up check, the emails, and this web site to hopefully help catch this man.
OH! and he has a new gmail email, [email protected]

D

Beware of scammer! I received one too from:
"Jasmine kratz" - [email protected]

"I would have loved to come see it but i cannot as i am out of town in preparation for the wedding. So i would like to buy it off from you relying solely on your judgment. My method of payment would be through a Check. Please let me know the final asking price so i can make arrangements as i will handle the shipment myself as i will be sending
a mover down to pick up the dress at your place.

NB: please provide me with your name and address to which the Check would be sent so we can wrap this up real quick as the wedding is just around the corner. I also want to inform you that there will be an excess amount of funds which you will forward to my mover (for shipment purposes).

Kind regards
Jasmine."

Paula Browne

I was going to be scammed by Victoria Givens. This is what she sent me when I asked her why I'm suppose to be sending someone a Western Union.

Dear Paula,

Yes ! that is the mail i was referring to. And you are sending the excess funds to a private mover who will come for pick up of the dress. The mover is also responsible for moving other stuffs to and
from the wedding venue, also she in charge of I and my fiancee's moving to our new house. I hope you understand how things can get when one is planning a wedding. I hope to read from you soon. please let me know if you have cash already.

Kind regards.
Victoria.

Hello, I just received a $2700.00 check delivered FedEx from a "Matthew Carter". I received the western union instructions as well. This scammer sent emails with the following names; Matthew Guiling and Matthew Malone, who claims to be a US Marine. I researched the name "Dwight Howell located at 1001 West Center St, Manteca, CA, 95337". I was sent to a website in a bing search that led me to a website URL that was not found. Please be aware of this Craigslist scam.

My item was listed for $175.00 and he also wanted me to take $100.00 out for my running around. Nice try scammer!

Frank

Other scam emails. They will sometimes have different "reply to" email addresses. Found this site b/c someone else got scammed by my first email addres, good practice to google the email address with quotes around, just in case someone else posted it (thanks, Liz) Here are the email addresses of my recent scammers:

What do I do with the check I so idiotically let them send me???
Please help!
Thanks

George

Frank: thanks for the update.

Ashley: Keep the check in a safe place, as it is evidence. You'll need it to file a local police report for any fraud, especially if you lost money in the scam.

i have found the best way to deal with these types of replies is simply give them the name of your local sheriff and the address to the sheriff's office.

if they're dumb enough to send the fake check to the sheriff...

Hi - I've been mugged too. I posted an ad for furniture and I too got this email: "I really appreciate your response to my inquiry. Im interested in buying the Item from you. I would love to come and check it myself but I just got >married and im presently on my honeymoon trip to Hawaii with my wife.I would love a surprise change of furniture in our home on our return.Pls do withdraw the advert from Craigslist as i dont mind adding $50 for you to do that, so i can be rest assured that the item is held for me. I should believe it is in good condition as stated. I will be making the payment via a Check, which my secretary will mail to you. I'll be picking the item from you with the aid of my mover. My Mover will be coming to pick it from you once the Check has been cashed. Pls I will need both your full name and physical address along with your phone number to issue out the payment.
Thanks,
Collins". The email address I got this from was: [email protected] I sent this person my full name, address and phone number. So what do I do now to prevent anything negative from happening?

Janel

Well, unfortunately I was taken for $2,125 with a money order scam. I kept every single email just in case I am arrested. I even reported the fraud to the Feds as soon as I found out that the first money order came back as fraudulent. They were US Postal Money Orders. This was a little over a year ago and I have been in contact with the police department here and so far no warrant has been issued against me. Thank goodness, but still have to come up with the money to pay the bank back. Also, there is another scam out there where they want you to purchase checks from Office Max and print them out using a downloaded program and mail them out. Which I did not do, because it says fraud all over it. I am much more aware now.

Leanna

I got this message in regards to my dog that I am trying to re-home. The fact that someone in another state (and a doctor at that) would want to get a mutt without even physically meeting her sounds extremely suspicious to me. I would never give my dog to anyone I have not personally met. Further more, even though I clearly stated she is a female, he refers to her as a "he" and also refers to her as "Pet" even though I clearly stated her name was "Pepsi." If someone was really interested in my dog, I don't think they would make such obvious mistakes. I am most certain this is a scam:

Hello,

Thanks for the quick responses.I live in Morgan town,WV , USA. I am gifted with one female child Donnie, she cherish pet a lot and she spent most of her time with our neighbor's pet and i have promised her your pet ,so i will want you to consider my family for the adoption. Today the [email protected] email address tried scamming me. Selling a cell phone on Craigslist and was hit up by someone who wanted to buy it through PayPal. Eventually I got the emails from PayPal stating that the funds were in the account. I checked the real paypal site and no funds were issued. I went back the the fraudulent email from PayPal and checked the full header. After going through the code it was actually sent from a different email [email protected] I called out the person who was texting me about what I was selling and emailed the person who sent me the fake emails and now they don't say anything. Be care full out there.

Johnny-come-lately

Watch-out for this "phishing" e-mail from:
[email protected] &
(AKA) [email protected]

He uses this lead-in to get you to respond:

'Let me know if the items you posted on
craigs list still for sale?'
____________________________
My Craigslist ad said:

If it's POSTED it's available !
I will remove the posting when sold.

But yet still got the above 'phish'(!)

(Note) Here is a tip:
If you click on "reply", notice that a
different email address will now "show" ,
NOT THE ONE that was on the incoming letter.
(dead-give-away)
e.g. => incoming: [email protected]
out going: [email protected]

This guy likes to Phish under Furniture and
Antiques that sell for over $100

(If you have the time, you can always go to:
http://www.suspectedscammers.com/index.php
and copy & paste the TWO addresses there.)

(P.S)
Try posting this at the bottom of your ad and
if you still get a 'phish' , then you will know
that the Scammer did not even read YOUR ad !

(post this)

``````Special Note`````
It's sad, but did you know that about 80% of
responses to Craigslist ads are from Spammers,
Scammers, and Trolls ?
Therefore, I will not respond to emails asking
if it is "still available".
If it's POSTED it's available !
I will remove the posting when sold.
It is a check scam where he sends you a check for more than the item is worth, says the extra is for shipping. So he tries to buy a $600 item but sends $2100, and says the extra is for the shipping company. I knew it was a scam from the get go but played along with it for a while. The check is Bank of America of Las Vegas and Casino Cage Department.
Beware all!
Originally I received an email from the following address: [email protected]
I replied to the original email and then when I received the reply back to remove the item, I noticed the addresses were different. If it hadn't been for someone commenting and listing the teddy4 address, I might not have realized this was a scam until it was too late.
My only concern is I did reply back with my name, address, and phone number. Do I have anything serious to worry about??
Larry Silva, SCAM! My boyfriend and I were looking for an apt/roommate on Craigslist. He replied with something that just seemed way too good to be true, so naturally, we assumed it was.he said he had a 2 bedroom flat for rent 430 a month, all utilities included, plus satellite cable. We google earthed the address,it was a 2 story 4 bedroom house for 1400 a month! What he had asked was for half first months rent and when he got that, he'd send key and documentation. Yeah, ok. I may be young, but I am most definitely not stupid!
hollie
[email protected] was his email. Just so you know! Be safe!!
Was selling my car for $1200 on Craigs List, told me to remove my add, will send me check via UPS and send movers. Got a check for $3,250. in a UPS envelope, nothing else. Pinto Arts LLC in Floriday. Citibank. Went to my back, verified scam. Mr. Jim Wuertz threatened me, said will call FBI, CIA, etc b/c I said it was a scam.
Great laugh, he almost had me, in this economy, of course I would drool over double the asking price of my piece of poo car!
Thank you for all these posts. I am selling something on craigslist and got a response that seemed a bit off and with a little research I came across this site and found the e-mail I recieved was full of red flags. Anyways, I posted the e-mail and the address of the person it came from below so you can see an example of what a scammer e-mail looks like.
From: Samuel Wilson
Thanks for your response,I am quite satisfied with the condition of
the item and price.I'm very much interested in buying the item from
you and I would like to make an outright purchase immediately do
withdraw the advert from the web. I don't mind adding $50 for you to
do that. I will be paying with a certified bank check. More so my
mover will be coming over for the pick up as I might not be available
to come for the pick up myself but am OK with the information from the
ad. I will need the following information details to make payment
arrangement done asap:
1,Your full name to be on the Payment.
2,Your mailing address including zip code.
3,Your phone #
As soon as i receive all this information and inspect the pictures and
get satisfied with it, i will instruct my secretary to overnight your
payment with he information you provided and also get back to you.
Kindest Regards
I've been approached by this email address over the sale of a car.
[email protected]
Email was too short to really be from someone who was interested. I was suspect. Glad I found this site. Mr. "Dave Steven" is still out there. Be wary.
Apparently the scammer I got in reply to a transmission I am selling isnt too bright. They wanted to have it shipped usps. Sure pal. I like the idea of replying and giving them the name, address, and phone of a nearby FBI office to have them send the check. These scammers need to die.
As you can see, this person sent me a certified check in the amount of 6,850.00 from a company that doesn't even exist. First off thanks to my bank, they ran it and wasn't even legite. They told me to foward all emails and the check to the police. Please if you answer any jobs on craigslist make sure the company is legite, also do not cash anything that you recieved in the mail, there going after women who are at home and have no jobs and the elderly. Thank god I was smart enough to figure this one out on my own. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me by email.
kasey
what do I do if I already gave someone my name, address, and ph# for a cashiers check. i already emailed them back and said no. do i just send the check back to them if it comes??? hellllllllllpppppp!
Lesley
I got a scam email from a Sandra Brown with the email addr [email protected] today.
It was the first time I sell things on craigslist so I wasn't aware of the check scam, but here is a list of all the warning flags I found before I start googling about craigslist scams:
1. The email has one from address and one reply-to address.
2. The person sent out the email at 3am.
3. The email was pretty long. I wouldn't spend that much time writing such a long email just to buy a bed.
4. She is not in town and would arrange movers to pick up the $200 bed without taking a look at it.
The last one obviously assures me that it was a scam. Come on, who would pay a mover for some used item that costs only 200? The mover would probably cost more than that.
Here is the second email I got: (The first one is just a general one asking whether the item is still available.)
Hello,
Thanks for getting back to me on time, I'm okay with the price and I
will like to know much about its present condition. I'm asking this
because I'm not going to be around to come look at it before payment &
pickup.
I will appreciate if you can send me more closer pix but if it's not
available and you can assure me of getting the best there is no
problem.
My mode of payment is via check, you will send me your full name and
address for it to be mailed. I have a reputable mover that will come
for the pickup after payment is settled. The check I'm sending will be
in excess, you will deduct your part and give the difference to the
mover for the shipping service. I'm asking you to do this for me
because of my tight schedule at work and I need to finalize this ASAP.
Best of Regards.
Has anyone heard of Michael Pitts n family. He sent me a check for my services wen he gets here. He isn't asking me to send anything back to him...so I don't kno if this is authentic or a scam, I already deposited the check but now I don't kno what to do
Mac
Hi guy's
I have just spent ages reading through many of the posts, and I would like to add David Matos to the list of people to be wary of.
I was selling my car and he emailed me asking if it was avaiable, and that he would send a "check" but added £50 to the asking price.
He said he would like me to remove the add as he needed to be the next owner of this car.
I was unaware of these scams and after a few messages back and forth, I sent him my detail(silly I know) days later a cheque arrives for triple the agreed price.
"David" who had been contacting me had also mentioned his shipper would collect the vehicle after the payment had cleared(this is what made me think it was legit,as I was not sending him anything and he never asked for anything in return) he never mentioned anything about me send any money back or paying any money out.
I put the cheque in my bank and a few days later I received a letter to say it was suspected as fraudulent.
The funds were removed from my account and I never heard from "David" again.
I am annoyed that he has my name and address, but I guess I should have known that when somebody wanted to purchase something that they have never seen, especially a car, in which buyers usual want to test drive first.
I should have known it was too good to be true.
Thanks for this site, even though I had been dumb enough to believe that I had a genuine buyer, I can now look out for other scams, this has been extremely helpful.
Thanks to all of you :)
Just got this email today for an item I have for sale on Craigslist. This scam is still going on--FYI...
Hello Dear,
Sorry for getting back so late, I am writing to let you know I'm
very interested in the item and even willing to pay you an additional
$50 if you are willing to sell to me, I would not be able to come pick
it up because i am currently away on a Missionary Outreach but i would
have my Movers Come for pick up once we finalize with the payment.
Also,its my first time transacting on craigslist, I really don't know
how it works but My Financier will be mailing (overnight) a certified
check to cover the cost, Apparently the check will carry the payment
for the item you are selling and the mover payment, it will be mail
via USPS and will get back to you with the tracking number as soon as
it is mail out to you. If you do accept with my terms of purchase
please get back to me with the information's below:
Name to be on Check :
Home address or Office Address (NO P.O BOX) :
City :
State :
Zip code :
Cell Phone Number:
Home Phone number :
Do get back to me with the information's above and consider it sold so
we can proceed immediately...
I await your swift response.
Just received an email from [email protected] in regards to my craigslist ad. Thanks to this message board I will not even reply to him.
WaltD
Thanks for the other posting. "Larry Silva" scam still out there on Craigslist. See below. Beware.
"Thanks for writing back. I really appreciate. Just to let you know; I'm okay with the condition, the price and I'm ready for the purchase. I'm willing to add an extra $30 so as to have it reserved in my favor. I would have loved to come for the inspection but due to my work frame it just won't fit in my schedule but more pictures will be deeply appreciated. My mode of payment will be by Check and it will be sent via courier service which will be delivered to you between 1-3 days. I'll be responsible for the pick-up, besides the movers/pick up money will be included with your payment so as to avoid delay and to enable movers to schedule an appropriate time for the pick-up at your location after the check is been cashed as I have other properties to be moved alongside yours. Kindly get back to me with your full name, mailing address and phone number so as to make out the payment to you ASAP. Kind Regards
Thanks."
So, Matthew Hollard / Ollard (listed in a comment above) posted an ad for a personal assistant to the HoosierTimesJobs.com board. I emailed him about being an assistant, and after googling his name, I'm fairly confident that he's moved on from craigstlist scams to employment scams, which is a special kind of cruel for job seekers.
So, here are some tags, hopefully people find this when they google:
Hey guys,
Just got a response from a Matthew Malone. He used the same scam as everyone above has said.
His email is: [email protected]
Katie
I have seen on here that someone was mugged by a man named Matt Hollard: email [email protected] I have recently been in contact with this man, and although it was not on Craigslist, I feel the need the let everyone know that I found his ad in the local newspaper! He was under the new email address of [email protected] Therefore, changing one number must make him feel like he can still get away with it. This was a JOB AD I replied to. He said it was for a personal assistant and gave me questions to answer and everything. Then asked for address to send me my first "money order" paycheck and extra for supplies. Never an interview or anything! What if I would have fallen for this? I have four kids at home and I would have quit my job. But there was never enough information from him and it made me leary the whole time. I am still expecting to receive this check from this guy and I don't know if there is anything I can do to try to get him caught and busted, but I will do anything I can. So, be careful with everything you do, even applying for jobs from your paper!
Lesly
I have had an incident with selling a wedding dress. The buyer refused to use PayPal and would only send me a cashier's check to my address. The envelope had no return address. The "fiance" had a miscommunication and sent me a cashier's check $1500 more than the dress price because he thought he was paying a wedding vendor. She then urgently told me to wire her wedding vendor money through Western Union because otherwise this would "delay her wedding plans" even further.
I fell for it and sent money, but luckily Western Union cancelled the transaction for an unspecified reason. They probably flagged this person. It was to a "Michael Davis" in Columbus, Ohio.
She also sent many a sob story that she had to go out of town unexpectedly and that she wouldn't have time to cash a check, so wiring money is the only way.
I will hear word from my bank in 45 days for the check to clear. I lesson that I have learned is that even if the transaction is posted on your bank account, it can take up to 45 days for your bank to verify from the other bank if the check is real.
